The life and career of the legendary Queen front man Freddie Mercury has always sparked interest. Not only among the band’s fans, but among other people too, who were fascinated by his voice, charisma and talent. For almost ten years there have been rumors flying around about a possible movie adaptation of his life.
After many failed attempts
According to some inside info, many directors have actually tried to bring it to the big screen. And failed miserably. But the many obstacles which prevented the movie from happening seem to have disappeared now. Last year in December, reports were saying that the writer of the Oscar awarded “The Theory of Everything”, the movie based on the life of scientist Stephen Hawking, might write the script of the Mercury biopic too. We are talking about Anthony McCarten. Fast forward to now, a year later, when new information has surfaced regarding the long-awaited biopic.
Director and lead actor
Deadline has reported that the director of X-Men, Bryan Singer, was just on the verge of accepting the offer to direct the Freddie Mercury movie. Days after, the director himself took to Instagram and confirmed that he will indeed helm the project. Reportedly, the title of the movie will be “Bohemian Rhapsody”, an homage to the band’s 1975 hit song and one of the best rock pieces ever written, according to the experts. GK Films producer Graham King along with 20th Century Fox and New Regency are going to take care of the project.
But there will be other important figures who will participate in bringing Freddie Mercury ’s amazing career and impressive life to the big screen. His former band mates, Brian May and Roger Taylor will help with the music production of the movie. Also, producer Jim Beach and executive Denis O’Sullivan will play some big roles in the creation of this biopic.
Rami Malek, from hacker to rock star
But maybe the most important factor of the discussion is the main lead. Who could possibly play the role of the legendary Freddie Mercury, and do it justice? A few years ago, Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) was connected to the project. But he gave up on it citing “creative differences” with Queen members, May and Taylor. After that, Ben Whishaw (Skyfall) was in talks to play the part, but he dropped out too.
Now, it seems like the Freddie Mercury biopic has found its perfect lead. Rami Malek will reportedly take on the role of the Queen lead singer. After appearing in “Night at the Museum” and “The Pacific”, Malek became known worldwide for playing gifted hacker Elliot Alderson in “Mr. Robot”, along with Christian Slater. This role in the acclaimed TV show even got him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor. So there is big hope there that he will do a great job.
All in all, if this movie turns out right, it may be one of the best big screen biopics of our times. And considering the character which is based on, fans will sure queue to see it. More of a reason for the director and actors to not disappoint them. Shooting for “Bohemian Rhapsody” will begin in early 2017, but a release date has not yet been confirmed.
