Yesterday the Senate silenced Senator Elizabeth Warren D-Massassuchetts after she slandered Sen. Session’s which is a violation of Senate Rule XIX. Senator Warren was reading a letter that was written by Coretta Scott King Letter in response to activity related to Sen. Sessions when he was an attorney. Sen. Mitch McConnell invoked Senate rule XIX. The rule is designed to keep Senators from insulting each other on the Senate floor.
After Sen. Warren was removed from the podium a vote was held in the Senate to bar her from being part of any debate regarding Sen. Jeff Sessions confirmation hearing. The vote was 49-43 in favor to silence Senator Warren.
“They can shut me up, but they can’t change the truth,” Warren later told CNN’s Don Lemon.”I literally can’t be recognized on the floor of the Senate,” she told Lemon. “I have become a nonperson during the discussion of Jeff Sessions.”
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell strongly defended his position:
“She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted,”
As a result of this Sen. Warren will be unable to speak at all during the debate however she may cast her vote. CNN reported:
Warren went straight from the Senate floor to a call-in appearance on Rachel Maddow’s MSNBC show, a favorite of progressives. “I’ve been red-carded on Sen. Sessions. I’m out of the game of the Senate floor,” she told Maddow.
She also read King’s letter outside the Senate floor in a Facebook live video.
Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committee blasted out a supportive statement. Interim chairwoman Donna Brazile said: “It’s a sad day in America when the words of Martin Luther King Jr.’s widow are not allowed on the floor of the United States Senate. Let Elizabeth Warren speak.
Since this event, there have been numerous complaints on both sides about decorum in the Senate. As the days go on the partisanship in the Senate has been increasing. However, the Democrats started this whole thing by not showing up in committee in a effort to hold up the Trump Administration. As a result the government has been stalled because Democrats didn’t get “their” way. Good for the Republicans to stand up for what they believe and silence this out of touch progressive liberal.
