Today Democrat Lawmakers have locked arms against Trump and every hour it seems more will not be attending Friday’s Inauguration Ceremony. As of 3:30PM EST the count was 53 Lawmakers will not be in attendance.
The Washington Post reported earlier today that:
“Here are now more than 40 House Democrats — 44, at last count — who have declared that they will not attend the inauguration on Capitol Hill this week. The number rose sharply after Trump tweeted Saturday that Lewis is “all talk, talk, talk” and should “finally focus on the burning and crime infested inner cities.”
Lewis, who sees Trump’s Nov. 8 win as illegitimate because of Russia’s alleged interference in the election, is best known for leading civil rights protests in the 1960s, including the 1965 march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., in which state troopers brutally attacked the crowd. Lewis will not attend the inauguration, he told NBC News in an interview for Sunday’s “Meet the Press.”
Many of the 44 Democrats that decided not to attend the ceremony cited it was because of Mr. Trump’s attack on Rep. John Lewis. Democratic lawmakers that have chosen not to attend and reported that they will remain with the people of their district, one lawmaker will join a women’s Anti-Trump protest.
Mr. Trump has repeatedly stated that he wishes to bridge a gap with the African American community. However, attacking a civil rights leader such as John Lewis seems to have only widened that gap. The incoming President must remember that actions are louder than words and attacking an African American icon such as John Lewis is no way to start.
