This year’s Golden Globe Awards have been, as usual, full of surprises and interesting moments. Among them were also some records, like the seven awards which the musical “La La Land” received (out of seven nominations) and Tracee Ellis Ross’ win for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, which made her the first black woman to receive this distinction since 1983. The show had its emotional moments too, like Meryl Streep’s empowering speech and the tribute for Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds.
Some not so good things
However, apart from the glamour and elegance of the Golden Globes, there were also some not so good moments going on. Most of them were linked to the presenter of the event, Jimmy Fallon. He apparently does not seem to know how to talk without a script. Right at the start of the show, the teleprompter failed to work. So, when Fallon had to improvise in order to fill time, he even started tripping on stage because he did not know what to say. He was also not funny at all throughout the entire night and proved to be quite a boring and unprepared host.
One of the biggest surprises of the night was Aaron-Taylor Johnson’s win for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture in “Nocturnal Animals”. Everyone was expecting Mahershala Ali to actually pick up the award. Still, the Golden Globes are known for their unpredictability, so maybe Ali will have more luck at the Academy Awards. A controversial moment was that of Sofia Vergara and how she made some very inappropriate jokes about Sylvester Stallone’s three daughters. Nobody understood them, nobody laughed and some considered them very rude. Sophia, Sistine, and Scarlet all shared the title of Miss Golden Globes for the night.
When the words are not that well-chosen
Tom Hiddleston, who took home the award for Best Actor for his miniseries “The Night Manager”, made everyone raise their eyebrows. He turned a speech about his humanitarian work in Sudan into something of a self-praise. He said that while he was there, the workers would binge-watch his show. So, we were supposed to admit that it is so good that even they watched it? Why bring up Sudan and your humanitarian work if you are not going to say something truly important?
Jenna Bush asked Pharrell Williams on the red carpet about his movie “Hidden Fences”. Apparently, there was nothing wrong, right? Except for the fact that “Hidden Fences” does not exist. Pharrell’s movie is called “Hidden Figures” and she mixed it up with another movie which had many black actors in it, “Fences”. Moreover, the confusion kept going as Michael Keaton made the exact same mistake when he introduced Octavia Spencer. She apparently starred in “Hidden Fences” too.
Still, the high moment of the night was Meryl Streep’s amazing speech. She slammed Donald Trump so hard and she did not even need to pronounce his name. She talked about how powerful people should not promote violence and should not mock people with disabilities, which Trump did. At the end, she remembered her dear friend Carrie Fisher and moved the entire audience to tears.
