Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has recently talked about the Marvel Cinematic Universe and what the future holds for their super hero movies. They project has turned from a very daring idea into a worldwide, hugely popular phenomenon. Marvel managed to turn people’s attention towards this genre while not making cheesy or cartoony movies. They adapted it to the modern, real world and lesser known superheroes like Captain America or Thor became some of the most popular faces in cinema. But what is going to happen with those superheroes and their movies in the future? More precisely, after the Marvel Cinematic Universe will end its Phase 3 with the highly anticipated movie-event ‘Avengers: Infinity War”.
The ”post-Infinity War” era
Fans everywhere have been wondering if the superheroes they know and love so much will still have anything to do after “Infinity War”. Also, if they will still be portrayed by the same actors, should Marvel decide to keep them around. Marvel has been saying for quite some time now that the Phase 4 will most likely introduce new characters and new stories for fans to discover. Moreover, some superheroes’ solo movies (like Iron Man and Captain America) are already done. They will only appear in team movies from now on. This makes us question if they will still be needed in the Phase 4.
The recasting issue
It is absolutely normal for fans to be worried about recasting their favorite superheroes. Would you see someone other than Robert Downey Jr. playing Tony Stark? Or Chris Hemsworth to not be Thor anymore? Right know it may seem inconceivable for some of us. But Kevin Feige reassures the fans that this will happen a few years from now. And if it will happen, fans should not be worried at all. He explained that the transition will be swift and fans will have time to accommodate with the new heroes.
Feige used the example of Spider-Man. Right now, a new actor is portraying Spidey and he already appeared in “Captain America: Civil War”. He will also have his own movie next year. What was the reaction from the public? Amazing. People loved the new Spider-Man. So, this proves that it can be done and in a successful manner. Also, Feige encouraged fans to think about characters like James Bond or Sherlock Holmes who have been portrayed by numerous actors over decades. Still, they have not lost their appeal.
Actors have made the characters their own
As for the actors portraying them, Feige said that they are a big part of the reason why the Marvel heroes became so loved. In the recent “Doctor Strange”, Benedict Cumberbatch managed to adapt the character of Stephen Strange to fit into the modern world. He played him in such a way that people fell in love instantly. And the movie became a huge success. People even compared him with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. They both succeeded in twisting the character and making it their own while appealing to the public.
All in all, fans of Marvel should be focusing on the present right now. There are enough movies to keep them busy in the near future, like “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2” or “Thor: Ragnarok”. What will happen after, we will have to wait and see. But for now, the future looks good.
