On Thursday Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell opened his rhino mouth and said that he “thinks finishing on tax reform will take longer.”
The Trump administration expressed that they want Tax reform passed before the August break. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has said:
“So we are committed to pass tax reform,” he told CNBC. “We want to get this done by the August recess.”
On July 31st the Senate is scheduled for a break and would not return until after Labor Day. However, Paul Ryan already has the congress work seven days a week until the health care bill is completed so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Senate has to stay in Washington longer.
Senator McConnell said that the main focus is to install a new health care plan before working on tax reform.
“It is complicated. All of those discussions are already under way,” McConnell said. “How do you craft it?”
To get both these bill through Republicans are looking to use reconciliation so that they will only need Republican support.
That attitude McConnell has may have worked under any other administrations but the Trump administration is a different animal. The way President Trump likes to get things done I wouldn’t be surprised if the Senate works completely through the summer to get the Presidents agenda done. This may be the first time McConnell has ever had to really work since becoming Senator.
