Nikki Haley, the New U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations

Donald Trump’s transition team announced on Wednesday that he has chosen South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley to be the new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. This move is somehow expected considering the fact that she was once a solid vice-president pick. By appointing Haley (44 years-old) in such a high position Trump might look to reconnect with minorities and women.

A legacy of her own

Nikki Haley has been an inspiration to many people. She is the daughter of two Indian immigrants, and she managed to create a career for herself. She was her state’s first female and first minority governor. Haley worked at her family’s Lexington clothing store before 2004, when she decided to follow a career in politics. In a statement released on Wednesday, the former South Carolina governor said that she feels a “sense of duty” in accepting Donald Trump’s offer to be the new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. She also said that

“When the President believes you have a major contribution to make to the welfare of our nation, and to our nation’s standing in the world, that is a calling that is important to heed.”

She acknowledged the great challenges the nation is currently facing, both internal and external. Moreover, she thinks that now, the country might be on the right track, if everyone will work together for the greater good. The Senate needs to confirm her first. Haley would succeed Samantha Power in this important position at the White House.

Candidate for secretary of state

However, before Trump chose her as the ambassador to the United Nations, Haley was in the books for the post of secretary of state. So after this decision, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani are among those who are still in the running for the highly important position.

A love-hate relationship

Still, even if now things might seem peaceful and positive, there was a tie when Nikki Haley was not a supporter of Donald Trump. During the presidential campaign, they have both attacked each other numerous times. Haley did not support Trump’s ideas at all, especially his Muslim ban which she called “un-American”. Trump himself deemed her immigration ideas as being very weak. He later tweeted that everyone in South Carolina feels embarrassed by Haley. However, before that, back in 2012, Trump contributed with $5,000 to a pro Haley political group. So things have been black and white.

Even if she admitted to not being a fan of Donald Trump, she voted for him. She was actually really happy when he won the election. According to specialists, it is remarkable that after their clashes, Donald Trump even considered her for this position. This might prove that he is very interested in choosing the best people for their jobs. He does not take into consideration any past conflicts or their opinions. Which is a very good thing. It also proves that Donald Trump is one who likes to talk a lot, but when it comes to acting, he will act in the nation’s best interest.
