With the reboot of the Tomb Raider series, we have been on incredible adventures with Lara Croft on the first game in the series that was launched in 2013. The story showed us a character that keeps evolving and changing as a result of other people, but also her own fate. Her story continues with the splendid Rise of the Tomb Raider sequel, which was released on Xbox 360 and Xbox One in November last year, and on PC only four days ago.
So what should you expect from the new video game? Well, first of all a change of attitude. Lara is no longer fearful even though she still has to go through some tough moments. This time she knows perfectly what she is capable of, and this only contributes to her powerful character. However, the game still has to convince the players that even though Lara has grown a lot, she still has much more to do.
In Rise of the Tomb Raider you will witness a young Lara Croft who has to explore various ruins and solve numerous puzzles, while shooting her enemies with flaming arrows. The game also features many survival elements, such as hunting and scavenging for items and combining them to make weapons. Players have the opportunity of choosing between melee or ranged combat with a wide variety of weapons to choose from, from guns and bows to pickaxes.
Among the new aspects of the game is a crafting system which allows players to create whatever they need on the go, once they have found all the resources they need. For instance, you can use deathcap mushrooms to poison your arrows or turn cans and bottles into grenades and Molotov cocktails. Furthermore, as your different skills increase as you play, Lara’s other abilities will improve as well, such spotting various resources, reading mysterious signs and even her efficiency in combat.
Apart from the main storyline, the sequel features some side missions which reward you with various prizes. Weapons, crafting tools and other items can also be bought with in-game currency.
We could not end this review without mentioning the stunning visuals. The splendid Rise of the Tomb Raider sequel takes place in Siberia, in a geothermal valley. The landscape truly looks and feels alive, whether we are talking about the snowy peaks or the lush forests, which are teeming with diverse animals and plants. This time, you will definitely feel like a combination of a hunter, explorer and gatherer.
