Bali Boat Explosion: German Tourist Dead

An explosion that happened on a boat off the Indonesian island of Bali has killed a German tourist. The blast reportedly injured 19 other people. Officials are saying that the cause might be a “short circuit” near the fuel tank of the boat. They clarified that there wasn’t any bomb involved.

There were about 30 people on the boat at the time of the incident, all foreigners. Four other people were part of the crew. They were travelling to the nearby holiday island called Gili Trawangan. This was one of the regular boats that were carrying tourists from Bali to the Gili Islands. A passenger from Portugal talked with the reporters.

“About five minutes after we left we saw an explosion and we saw people injured … not fire, just explosion and smoke. The message is simple: Bali is not a good spot for tourists. I will never recommend Bali as a tourist spot.”

This is not an uncommon incident because everybody knows about their poor maritime safety record. Because of this, lethal accidents happen frequently. There were reportedly 17 English tourists were on the boat along with others from France, Italy, Portugal, Ireland and Spain.

How it happened

200m after the boat departed the Padang Bai port in eastern Bali, the explosion happened.  The name of the boat was  Gili Cat 2. The police are saying that it happened approximately 5 minutes after departing.

Local police chief Sugeng Sudarso declared that the passengers said the blast came from the fuel tank. He remembered that above that fuel tank there was a battery. This led to the scenarios that a short circuit was what caused the explosion.

He said that the explosion shattered the boat’s windows and destroyed the seats completely. The deceased German tourist died from severe head injuries. The reports are saying that the German woman was hit in the head by debris, thus causing her death. She is still unidentified, apart from her nationality.

Another woman is thought to have lost both her legs from below her knees during the blast. The rest of the injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals for further medical care and examinations. One of the hospitals is the Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.

A spokeswoman for the British embassy in Jakarta said that the embassy is helping and assisting the British citizens hurt during the explosion on the boat.

Popular but dangerous

Bali is one of the most popular tourist destinations for holidays. But unfortunately this is not an isolated incident. Last year, a series of small explosions injured many tourists when they hit a ferry. It was crossing between Bali and the holiday island of Lombok.

Islamist militants also targeted Indonesia. For example, in January, attacks with guns and bombs on its capital Jakarta killed 8 people: four civilians and four attackers.

But Bali is no stranger to these kinds of attacks. In 2002, two bombs killed 202 people when they exploded in an area that was very populated with tourists. It may not be the safest bet for a holiday, but Indonesia is still among the most popular tourist destinations.
