What to expect from 2017 Golden Globe Awards

The 74th Golden Globe Awards ceremony is going to take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, on Sunday night. The Golden Globes are renowned for kicking off the awards season and for providing some clues into who might be the big winners of the season. The host of the event will be Jimmy Fallon, the funny “The Tonight Show” presenter. He will be replacing Ricky Gervais as the host of the Golden Globes. Fallon also hosted the 2010 Emmy Awards, so this will not be his first time at the helm of such a big event.

The best of the best

There are a lot of nominees this year. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association actually decides who the nominees and after that, who the winners are. The categories include movie, television and music. The association is so big that now represents 56 countries from all over the world. There are few very interesting titles up for the Best Drama category, among which are  Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge”, “Manchester by the sea” or “Moonlight”. “La La Land” and even “Deadpool” received nods in the Best Musical or Comedy category.

As for television shows, the favorites in the Best Drama category are “Game of Thrones”, “Westworld”, “Stranger Things” and “The Crown”. For limited release or TV movie are nominated shows like “The Night of” or “The Night manager”. “Atlanta” or “Veep” also received some nods in the Best Comedy category.

What the critics are saying

As usual, some critics have divided opinions about some winners. Others think that a certain movie or show will win for sure. However, many of them are saying that the Best Drama movie award will go to “Manchester by the sea” along with its main actor, Casey Affleck. As for Best Actress, the winner is probably going to be Natalie Portman for her portrayal of Jackie O in “Jackie”.

“La La Land”, the critically acclaimed musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone will probably pick up the Best Musical or Comedy award. Its main stars are also expected to win big, maybe both of them. Netflix’s “The Crown” which presents the story of Queen Elizabeth is the favorite to go home with the Best TV Drama award. Moreover, the main actress, Claire Foy will probably win the Best Actress award too. So, this year is entirely possible that “Game of thrones” will go home empty handed. The same way goes for “Mr. Robot”. Critics are expecting “Atlanta” to win the honor of Best TV comedy, along with its main actor, Donald Glover. Tom Hiddleston’s “The night manager” is the favorite to win the Best mini-series and TV movie category.

Like every year, there will be a lot of stars present at the Golden Globe Awards event. Some of them will be even presenting various awards. One interesting fact is that Meryl Streep will receive a distinction for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment”. All for her over 40-year career. She has won three Oscars and eight Golden Globe Awards. NBC will broadcast the show from 5 p.m., on Sunday.
