Recently, president-elect Donald Trump responded affirmatively when asked about whether or not he will be living in the White House. But things seem to be much different for his wife Melania and their 10-year old son Barron. According to Trump, they are going to live in New York City until he finishes his school year.
Some call it a ritual, others a tradition. Whatever the case may be, on Inauguration Day, the former first family moves back to their home town. while the new one relocates into the White House. Interestingly enough, the Obama family will also move just a few miles away from the White House. So neither family will respect the so called “tradition”. And the reasons for this are similar. The Trump family wants to allow Barron to finish his school year in Manhattan, while the Obamas want to allow Sasha to conclude her studies in D.C.
A White House without its First lady
Will things be any different than before, considering Melania ’s absence in the beginning of her husband’s presidency? Probably not. The White House will still be taken care of by the people hired to do so. Dinners will still be taking place and tours too. Anita McBride, who served as chief of staff to Laura Bush said that there is no need to worry about such things. After all, first families come and go, but the White House was and will continue to be there, welcoming everyone. It is about learning to adapt and each First Lady is very different than the other.
Michelle Obama has actually announced that she wishes to continue her humanitarian and advocacy work. This is another reason for which the Obamas will remain in D.C. But we cannot help but wonder. What will happen if Michelle’s present will cover that of the actual first lady? Or will Michelle try to lay low and make a more subtle impact, in order to allow the spotlight to fall on Melania Trump? The situation can go both ways and everyone is eager to know what will happen.
Substitutes for the First Lady
It is not very common for other female members of the president’s family to take on the role of the First Lady. But this is what might happen now. Ivanka Trump or even Trump’s other older children might assume Melania ’s role while she is away. The same thing happened with Jacqueline Kennedy. She preferred to travel a lot and while she was away, other relatives would deal with business destined for the First Lady. Also, Bess Truman was a First Lady who did not like the spotlight very much and she was often spending summers in Missouri, in the company of her daughter.
All in all, one should know that the job of a First Lady is not very specific. There are no clear duties which must be accomplished nor a perfect way to deal with this situation. Each First Lady is different and they all have done different things for the nation.
