It appears that Americans were quite set on improving their appearance last year, as the United States has recorded a staggering increase of 48 percent in 2015. No less than 27,449 lip surgeries either involving implant or augmentation procedures were performed.
The selfie mania seems to be partly to blame for this trend. Apart from the models that are set by society and celebrities, the fact that people constantly take pictures of themselves has made them more self-conscious of their looks.
A new report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has revealed that lip surgeries have skyrocketed over the past fifteen years with 48 percent. The operations have increased from 26,025 in 2014 to 27,449 in 2015.
Apart from lip surgeries, other types of facial augmentation have also become more frequent, such as soft-tissue fillers and Botox injections, which have increased by 1000 percent since 2000. In 2015 alone, 9.2 million such interventions were recorded.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons president, Dr. David Song,
“We live in the age of the selfie, and because we see images of ourselves almost constantly on social media, we’re much more aware of how our lips look.”
It appears lip surgeries are popular among people who prefer to go through subtle changes, and thus avoid facelifts or eyelid surgeries. Furthermore, fillers require patients to return for maintenance shots as they wear off in several months. However, implants are permanent thanks to the advanced technology.
In more detail, the procedure involves flexible and soft silicone implants which are known to be more stable and pliable than the ones of the past. These implants can also be easily removed if needed.
In spite of these rising numbers, breast augmentation remains the king of plastic surgeries, followed by liposuction and nose shaping. In 2015 alone, 279,143 women modified the size of their breasts, while 222,051 chose liposuction and 217,979 reshaped their noses.
In the minimally invasive procedures field, the Botox injections have climbed to the top spot with over 6.7 million surgeries. These are followed by tissue filler with 2.4 million procedures in 2015.
Lastly, the report also presents cosmetic surgery trends from last year. The total of all such procedures reached 15,908,330, including minimally invasive and surgical operations. In comparison, 2000 only recorded 7,401,495.
