On Wednesday, Ana Ivanovic, former world number one female tennis player and Grand Slam champion has officially announced her retirement from the game. Her decision comes unusually early in a tennis player’s life, at just 29 years-old. The main reason for her retirement is according to her, the fact that she no longer feels like she can compete at a very high level.
Ana Ivanovic, the champion
The Serbian was actually the first female tennis player from her country to win a Grand Slam title. Hers came in 2008, in Paris, at Roland Garros. In the tournament’s final she managed to beat Russian Dinara Safina and won the trophy. Also, it is interesting that in the same year, her compatriot Novak Djokovic managed the same achievement. He managed to win the Australian Open. Ana Ivanovic made the announcement during a live-session with her fans on Facebook.
Her French Open victory marked the beginning of her career as a class A tennis player on tour. After that, she quickly became a threat for every other player and went on to win many more titles since then. However, her reign as the number one player did not last long. After a few weeks, she began dropping in the rankings and at the end of 2009, Ivanovic was on 22.
Beauty and strength
Her final match in 2016 and, as it seems now, in her entire career, was at the U.S. Open. However, she sadly lost in the first round to the Czech Denisa Allertova. Interestingly enough, in 2008, she could have won two Grand Slam titles had it not been for Maria Sharapova’s win over her. That time it was in the final of the Australian Open. Moreover, a year earlier, in 2007, she reached the final of the French Open for the first time, but she lost to Justine Henin.
Ana Ivanovic also became known to the world thanks to her beauty. For years, she graced the covers of numerous beauty, fashion and fitness magazines. Moreover, she was also the face of various international brands. Her always happy personality won her a lot of friends in the industry.
As for her future, Ana Ivanovic said that her supporters should not be sad because they will see her again. According to her, she wants to mingle in the beauty and fashion industry. Also, Ivanovic said that another one of her dreams is to become an ambassador for a healthy lifestyle and sport. She also thanked everyone who helped her become the champion of today, including her fans, friends and family. She leaves tennis from the number 63 spot in the rankings.
Many of her friends quickly congratulated her on the amazing career and wished her the best in the years to come, after the announcement. Among them were Serena Williams and current world number one player, German Angelique Kerber. This year, the Serb married German international soccer player Bastian Schweinsteiger. In 2012, Ivanovic alongside her Serbian team consisting of Jelena Jankovic, Bojana Jovanovski and Aleksandra Krunic were defeated by the Czech Republic in the final of the Fed Cup, in Prague.
