Terrorist Attack in Kabul Kills 12 People at the American University

A terrorist attack took place at the American University of Afghanistan. As a result of this attack seven students, two security guards and three policemen died on campus in the attack, according to Basir Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Kabul Chief of Police. Another 30 people have suffered injuries.

According to him around 750 students were on campus at the time of the attack. The police have managed to shoot down two of the attackers.

They had entered the campus armed with guns and explosives. No group has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack yet. But the Afghan and US governments have been battling the Taliban for years, so they are the most likely suspects. Recently the terrorist organization has abducted two Afghan professors.

The American University of Afghanistan does not in fact have many American students. But there are American staff members. Some speculate that the reason why the attackers chose this building is because it is a symbol of American-Afghan cooperation.

One witness, who wished to remain anonymous, described the terrorist attack, “Everyone looked around the room looking for an escape. We have an emergency exit area in the corner of the campus […] Everyone was running out of there.”

“People were screaming for help. Everyone was screaming,” witness said. Other sources say that when the people heard the first shots and explosions, chaos erupted on campus. The noise apparently came from the entrance.

Recent Terrorist Attacks Keep Everyone on Edge

Tensions are high in Kabul, the capital of the Afghan state. Recently, there have been a series of kidnappings and bombing perpetrated by the Taliban.

Diplomats are no longer allowed to travel by road from the international airport to the city. Instead, they are brought in by helicopter.

This is not the first terrorist act to take place at the American University of Afghanistan. Just three weeks earlier, classes were suspended because two professors were kidnapped on campus, at gunpoint. One was American, the other was Australian. So far the police have not been able to locate them.

The university opened its gates 10 years ago. It is the only private coed university in Afghanistan. There are nearly 2000 full-time and part-time students attending courses here.

The university is an elite school, a sort of symbol of modern and liberal Afghanistan. The US has offered a number of scholarships for Afghan students, including women, to attend this university.

The US National Security Council has made the following statement regarding this terrorist attack, “The United States condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist attack today on the American University of Afghanistan.”

“We send our thoughts and prayers to the families and loved ones of those killed”

“We further reaffirm the support of the United States for the Afghan government and people as they continue to build a more stable, secure, and prosperous Afghanistan”

US defense officials are closely monitoring the situation. There are a number of American advisers currently in Afghanistan. They will be counseling Afghan authorities throughout their mission. These advisers do not have a military role, they are there only to provide advice and recommendations.

Even though Afghanistan has seen some major improvements during the past decades, its political and social situation remains tense.
