Two women who were accused of killing Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of the North Korean leader, have been charged with murder. Their names are Doan Thi Huong from Vietnam and Siti Aisyah from Indonesia. On February 13, Kim died after someone smeared a strong poison on his face while he was at the Kuala Lumpur airport. He passed away shortly after. Those two women allegedly did it. If the authorities will find them guilty of murder, they could even face the death penalty. They both appeared in a court nearby the Malaysian capital. After the charge was read out loud, Huong preferred to speak in English and said that she was not guilty of anything.
A plan orchestrated by North Korea?
The majority of people strongly believe that everything that happened was North Korea’s very well-orchestrated plan. The officials in the country denied everything but considering the fact that Kim was a strong opponent of the country’s regime, it is entirely possible. Interestingly enough, both women stated that they received a sum of money in order to participate in a TV show which specializes in pranks.
A North Korean citizen, Ri Jong Chol, is also a suspect. However, for the moment, the authorities have not taken any decision in his regard. They are reportedly waiting for the police to finish the investigation. There are two other suspects: an official working at a North Korea embassy in Kuala Lumpur and a staff member of the country’s airline. According to South Korea’s suspicions, four of the suspects are actually North Korean spies.
A murder mystery
The deadly attack happened on February 13, when Kim Jong-nam was waiting for a flight to Macau, his hometown. Suddenly, someone covered his face from behind and smeared it with the toxic nerve agent VX. This is a very powerful chemical weapon which all the countries in the world banned. He then managed to go to the customer assistance bureau and they called an ambulance. Unfortunately, it was too late as he was already dead when the paramedics arrived. Interestingly enough, North Korea never officially said that the man who died was indeed Kim Jong-nam. He was reportedly traveling under a different name. Moreover, the country refused Malaysia’s offer to conduct an autopsy.
As for the two women, little is known about them. Doan Thi Huong is from Vietnam and according to her family, she left her home village in Vietnam at 17. She went to study in the capital city of Hanoi. Since then, her family rarely saw her and they were even surprised to find out that she was in Malaysia. She is currently 28-years old. The authorities arrested the other woman, Siti Aisyah, and her boyfriend who is Malaysian for the killing. The authorities then reportedly released him on bail. She is the one who stated that she received about $90 to smear what looked like baby oil on Kim’s face, as part of a TV prank show. It remains to be seen whether or not they are going to be found guilty.
